HDX™ RichGraphics
HDX RichGraphics with RemoteFX
HDX RichGraphics enables you to optimize the performance of graphics-intensive 2D and 3D and media rich applications. This capability offers the ability to leverage both software and hardware-based rendering to assist with compression, performance, and network efficiency. The newly announced HDX RichGraphics with RemoteFX will leverage the Microsoft RemoteFX technology platform (when it’s released) to extend the benefits of hardware-based acceleration to multiple users sharing a single Windows server or Hyper-V server.
OpenGL and DirectX applications
HDX 3D Pro Graphics – This feature of HDX RichGraphics extends desktop virtualization to advanced users of CAD/CAM and engineering applications, even over WAN connections, averaging 90% less bandwidth usage compared to competing solutions – even those that use proprietary chipsets! This feature enables organizations to source talent on a global basis, rapidly provision those workers with high powered desktops and 3D applications, yet maintain centralized control over intellectual property.

It leverages the latest in graphics compression, and offers both software-based and an optional GPU-based mode that provides a great user experience across high latency, low bandwidth connections.

Optimized for the WAN
With GPU-assisted image compression
Progressive Display - Aggressively compresses graphics while they are in motion, then returns them to detailed resolution when they are static. These graphics optimizations provide responsive performance while reducing bandwidth usage by 15X.
The optional use of a CUDA-enabled NVIDIA GPU for graphics compression enables XenDesktop to deliver a great user experience across high latency, low bandwidth connections.

In March 2010, Citrix and Microsoft signed a joint collaboration agreement to work together to enable Citrix HDX technologies on the Microsoft RemoteFX technology platform. RemoteFX, which will be available from Microsoft later this year, will allow all virtual desktops on a single Windows Server or Hyper-V server to share the power of graphics acceleration hardware built into server and end user devices. As part of the new collaboration agreement, Citrix XenDesktop™ will expand its high-definition HDX™ technology to further enhance the capabilities of RemoteFX and extend them to a broader range of use cases and locations. By addressing the most demanding rich graphics environments, Citrix and Microsoft will continue working together to advance the state-of-the-art in desktop virtualization technology, making virtual desktops a rich, high-definition experience for all users, regardless of their device, location or role. The new capabilities will include the ability to:
- Detect & leverage RemoteFX hardware acceleration – Citrix XenDesktop with HDX technology will be able to detect RemoteFX-capable servers and endpoints, leveraging their built-in hardware acceleration to deliver graphics-intensive, media-rich or 3D applications to virtual desktop end users.
- Extend virtual desktops to any device, anywhere – Citrix HDX technology will also enable RemoteFX to extend beyond the LAN to deliver rich graphics desktops and applications to broader range of devices, networks and use cases. Customers will be able to use integrated HDX and RemoteFX technologies to deliver virtual desktops to all their users, regardless of their location or device.
- Expand the Value of HDX – Citrix HDX technology is designed to ensure a high definition experience for all virtual desktop users, regardless of device, location or use case. It incorporates a wide range of state-of-the-art technology from the datacenter to the device, including capabilities like HDX RealTime, HDX MediaStream, HDX Broadcast and HDX Plug-n-Play. The collaboration with Microsoft will add a new set of technologies called “HDX RichGraphics with RemoteFX”, further enhancing the virtual desktop experience for customers with RemoteFX enabled servers and endpoint devices.
